***THE PERFORMANCE TAKES PLACE IN A SMALL ENVIRONMENT AND INVOLVES PROXIMITY BETWEEN THE AUDIENCE AND THE PERFORMER
IT
Stanza is a durational, installation-based one-on-one performance. The title refers to the space that the performer inhabits every day for eight hours in a state of voluntary surrender with eyes closed, and into which the audience — one at a time — is invited to enter for a limited duration. The presence of the performer’s body, suspended between yielding and sleep, generates an intimate, held exposure that focuses attention on the time shared with the spectatorial body — simultaneously guest and intruder. The room becomes a metaphor for the thresholds that seal sleep: walls, doors, windows, eyelids. Stanza as refuge, as a device of visibility, and as an antechamber to a world without sleep and without waking. In this threshold between intimacy and exposure, the work interrogates sleep not only as a shared condition of vulnerability, but also as a critical figure of the present: an ambiguous space between abandonment and capture, between the possibility of withdrawal and a form of hypnosis — set against a historical moment marked by logics of surveillance, extraction and control.
