Shortly before dying from AIDS-related complications, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe was honoured with the retrospective The Perfect Moment — a title that evokes the precise instant in which an image captures the audience’s gaze and traps it in a power relation between erotic impulse and aesthetic force.

It is from within this hypnotic trap that the starting point of Matteo Sedda’s new choreographic duet, The Perfect Moment, takes shape. In a perpetuum mobile, the two dancers move through space following a slow and rigorous structure, leaving the naked body exposed and unguarded. Curves and movements, threaded through with constant tension, invoke the codes of Renaissance court dances of the Italo-French tradition — emptied of their historical function and repurposed as a device of control.

From this emerges a silent and irresistible power game: Eros and Thanatos infecting each other’s gaze, transforming eye contact into control and seduction into hypnosis.

Bio

Matteo Sedda is a choreographer, dancer and activist of Sardinian origin, based in Brussels. He has collaborated and continues to work as a freelance artist with artists including Jan Fabre, Enzo Cosimi and Igor x Moreno. Since 2018, Sedda has developed a choreographic research shaped by his experience with HIV, configured as a homage to artists who died from AIDS-related complications. Exploring the tension between eros and death, he reclaims the codes of historical dances to set historical memory in dialogue with artistic elaboration. In this confrontation between present and past, his seropositive body becomes the point of departure for a new choreographic writing. After his debut solo POZ! — in which coming out as a person living with HIV becomes an artistic gesture — he continued his trajectory with FUCK ME BLIND, a choreographic duet and winner of DNAppunti Coreografici 2024. From 2026 he begins a new research entitled The Perfect Moment. For 2026/2027 he is part of the réseau Grand Luxe as an associate choreographer. As an activist, he shares his personal experience to offer information and support around HIV, collaborating with several European organisations including LILA, Sensoa, Ex Aequo and Plateforme Prévention Sida.
