“E la bella stanza è vuota” draws on the inspirations that emerged from listening to Cindy Lee’s album Diamond Jubilee — a constellation of suggestions that guides the making of the work, as well as the energy and spirit of being on stage. The album as the first element of a dramaturgy that seeks to reflect on the elusive, imperceptible relationship with the other, attempting to enter into dialogue — perhaps in vain — with the memorial impulse at the heart of photographic practice: Nan Goldin, for instance, photographs in an impossible effort to hold on to her sister Barbara. The photograph, a cast of reality, impresses the moment, restores those who are gone; and yet, the mystery persists. What remains is only the testimony of this gathering of solitudes. The mystery of relation, and a photo session with four performers: a work that attempts to construct a cross-section of a multiple, varied humanity that literally passes before us — almost a raw, living, acid-soaked synthesis of a series of narratives manifesting through the relationship between bodies and identities and their metamorphoses. Being looked at, and looking, becoming dance. A movement that will ultimately leave only the afterglow of the memory of those who have passed through this now empty room.

Gianmaria Borzillo (Sorrento, 1995) is a dancer, performer and choreographer whose research moves across dance, performance and interdisciplinary artistic practices. His work develops through the dialogue between physical score, music and dramaturgy, via a transdisciplinary approach drawing on literature and cinema and nourished by collaborative processes and artistic encounters. A graduate in dance from the Civica Scuola di Teatro Paolo Grassi in Milan, he complemented his artistic training with a degree in Modern Humanities, later continuing his studies in Cinema and Literature at the Sorbonne Paris IV. As a performer, he collaborates with internationally acclaimed artists — most notably Alessandro Sciarroni, with whom he performs in works such as Save the Last Dance for Me, a project dedicated to the revival of the Polka Chinata (a traditional Bolognese dance), presented from 2019 at major international festivals and theatres. He has also worked with artists including Chiara Bersani and Antonio Tagliarini, engaging in collective processes that explore transmission, authorship and the relationship between bodies. Alongside his performance practice, Borzillo develops his own choreographic research: his debut work under the influence (2020) received a Special Mention in the Under 30 Directors call at the Venice Biennale and the Premio Leo de Berardinis. His subsequent production, Julius Eastman’s Femenine (2024), inspired by the music of Julius Eastman, was supported by institutions including CENTQUATRE-PARIS, the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. His most recent performative research, E la bella stanza è vuota, was selected for NID Platform 2025 (Open Studios section). His artistic practice is marked by a deep attention to music and cinema as compositional matrices, and by an interest in the body as a site of transformation, memory and relational experience. Through solo and collective works, he investigates processes of translation between bodies, the construction of other identities and the potential of performance as a space of shared perception.
