The hand has long been conceived as a conduit of power, transforming invisible energy into the world of form. The Latin term MANIFESTUS (clear, evident) contains within it the word manus (hand). To manifest is the way of saying “I AM HERE” — it is the moment in which we collectively seize a fleeting trace of reality, caught in the act, and present it to the evidence of the audience, the public square, the others. There is no rupture between thought, gesture and imagination: hands create and shape both matter and ideas — the distinctive organ of a humanity emancipated from the constraints of the animal world. They are faces without eyes, yet seeing and speaking. This project develops a choreography for a trio of dancers: an abstract form of representation, drawing on non-narrative references and the codes of street dance practices (tutting, fingering, popping, waving, voguing, flexing, etc.), defining an articulate and constantly shifting energetic space in which to manifest through dance in the flow of the present.
