A large, unrehearsed procession-spectacle with horses, singers and old FIAT 500s, elements gleaned from the fortunate scribbles of a girl on holiday who almost forgot her dream.

A dream of truly free time, probably sparked by her holiday reading: Bjung Chul-Han, who writes that “Inactivity has a logic of its own, its own language, temporality, architecture, magnificence – even its own magic. It is not a weakness or defect but rather an intensity”.

Working from her notes, and with almost no prior rehearsal, she tries to bring this dream
of truly ‘free time’ back to life by assembling its cast from existing communities in Soverato: an audience under a darkening sky, a drummer, a choir, several horses and old Fiat 500s, with their riders and drivers…

by Ant Hampton exploring live art in relation to tourism and 'free time', based on
research carried out in Palermo (supported by Teatro Bastardo) and Athens (supported
by Onassis AiR)

Alice De Crais – born in Rome and now based in London – is a performance artist and
theatre maker engaging with a range of artistic expressions, including film, live
performance and installation. Her creative exploration revolves around themes such

as memories, vulnerability, and intimacy. Graduated from Central Saint Martins (2023)
is now finishing her MA at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Ant Hampton made his first works under the name Rotozaza – a performance-based
project starting in 1998, which ended up spanning theatre, installation, intervention and
writing-based works. His work, though varied in tone and content, has consistently
played with a tension between liveness and automation. Most often, this has involved
guiding people through unrehearsed performance situations, and since 2007 it has
included the audience themselves within structures loosely defined as Autoteatro.
These works continue to tour internationally – over 80 different language versions exist
of the various Autoteatro productions created so far.

In September 2023 he founded Time Based Editions with David Bergé, an ongoing
series of ‘live books’ binding print to time, merging sound with paper. The first edition
was his own ‘Borderline Visible’ which won the 2024 IDFA DocLab award for Creative
Technologies.

Other solo projects include experimentation around 'live portraiture' as The Other
People: structured encounters with people from non-theatrical milieu. He has
contributed to projects by other artists including Ivana Müller, David Weber-Krebs, Anna
Rispoli, Daniel Sack, Jerome Bel and Forced Entertainment. Ant has created and led
workshops worldwide including for DAS (Netherlands) where together with Edit Kaldor
in 2013 he designed and mentored a 10-week block, ‘Every Nerve’, in turn leading to his
own wider investigation of radical trust, risk-taking and leaps of faith, most obviously via
the ‘automatic workshop’ The Thing, created with Christophe Meierhans. In 2024/ 2025
he began DETOURISTIKI, a project experimenting with creating live art in, for and
against places experiencing heavy tourism.
