Nico, Desertshore is a dance concert inspired by the music, voice and universe of Christa Päffgen, known as Nico. The tracks from her cult album Desertshore (1970) compose the sonic score of the performance, in which the dancers’ bodies and voices give shape to a dense, restless visual landscape, traversed by echoes of memory and poetry. Giovanfrancesco Giannini presents his new work in a site-specific, outdoor staging conceived expressly for IRA festival. Within a circular space, two figures never touch: in their gestures, a fracture with the real surfaces — an inner scar that propels them elsewhere. Immersed in a suspended dimension, they commune with their own ghosts and dance in their solitude. Time dilates into a rarefied atemporality, amplified by the sounds, noises and songs performed by Nico, drawn from Desertshore. A poetic journey through sound, memory and dance. The album Desertshore lives in absolute austerity and profound existential anguish. Its gait is that of a humanity incapable of remedying its fate; its solemnity that of a cry reaching from the depths of the centuries. The front and back covers of the album feature images from Philippe Garrel’s film La cicatrice intérieure (1971) — an uncompromising work that explains nothing and refuses every rhetoric of a conventional linear narrative.
